Welcome to the European Commission’s page on fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases). Whether you're an industry professional, policy stakeholder, or a curious citizen, this page is your gateway to learning more about these planet-warming gases and the reasons why we need to reduce their emissions. You can also find out about what the EU is doing and what each of us can do in this regard.

Setting a global benchmark, the new Regulation on fluorinated greenhouse gases (EU) 2024/573 will phase out planet-warming gases mostly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps. This will prevent the emission of 310,000,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2050 and, at the same time, create new opportunities for EU industry by spurring innovation, while citizens will benefit from the deployment of cleaner technologies.
With this new F-gas Regulation, the EU achieved another milestone of the European Green Deal, driving the EU closer to reaching its 55% emissions reduction target for 2030 and its 2050 climate neutrality goal. These pioneering rules can serve as a positive example and motivate countries outside the EU to take similar action on these harmful gases.

These new rules are the most ambitious in the world. They will avoid the use of planet-warming gases in products such as refrigeration, heat pumps, air conditioning equipment and aerosol sprays, making them more climate friendly. At the same time these rules will stimulate innovation and create new opportunities for EU industry, and citizens will benefit from the deployment of state-of-the-art technologies. The EU is also continuing its role as a leader in the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, and setting a positive example for partners around the world.
