At the occasion of the Informal Environment Council that took place in Gent on 13 July 2010, Joke Schauvliege, Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature and Culture and Chair of the Environment Council, and Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, made a joint statement.
According to the statement, they "decided to dedicate the working lunch of the Informal Council on Sustainable Materials Management to climate change" since "Sustainable Materials Management not only leads to a green economy by stimulating innovation, job creation and the conservation of natural resources, it could also entail bottom-up measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission on the short term".
