EU law requires Member States to ensure that greenhouse gas emissions from forestry are balanced by at least an equivalent removal of CO2 from the atmosphere between 2021 and 2030. The draft delegated act relating to setting Forest Reference Levels for this purpose is now open for feedback.

As part of the Union’s efforts to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030, Regulation (EU) 2018/841 integrates emissions and removals from forestry into the Union climate policy for the period from 2021 to 2030. This initiative sets the Forest Reference Levels used for the accounting that each country must apply between 2021 and 2025.

The public feedback step on the draft delegated act was launched on 17 August for a four-week period, until 14 September 2020.
