The European Commission today launched a public consultation to prepare the ground for revising the legislation that governs the monitoring and reporting by member states of greenhouse gas emissions, the 2004 Monitoring Mechanism Decision.

The Commission intends to propose the revision later this year in order to include new monitoring and reporting needs arising from recent legislation (in particular the 2009 climate and energy package of measures), take account of decisions reached at international level and make improvements based on experience with the Decision.

The web-based consultation, which is open for eight weeks and takes the form of a questionnaire, seeks the views of the public - organisations, businesses, public authorities and private individuals - on how the Decision should be reformed. The responses will be taken into consideration when the Commission drafts the revised legislation and will also be published online.
