Description

The European Union will hold a side event during the UN climate change conference in Bonn, Germany, entitled 'Long-term strategies and how to get all of society involved'.
The Paris Agreement invited countries to develop and present long-term low emissions development strategies by 2020. An increasing number of countries, along with cities, states, regions, and businesses are delivering such strategies, setting out a vision for their future to 2050.
In November 2018, the European Commission presented its proposal for a strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050, following an extensive public consultation. Intensive engagement with member states, industry stakeholders, civil society and citizens continues to be a key principle as the proposal is now being discussed within the EU.
Other countries around the world are going through similar processes as they are preparing their long-term development strategies and visions for low-carbon and resilient futures. It is through common ownership that the transition will take place.

- Artur Runge-Metzger, European Commission, Directorate-General for Climate Action
