On 25 April 2024, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) hosted an Innovation Fund stakeholder workshop to gather perspectives and insights on best practices with the aim of boosting battery manufacturing in Europe.
This workshop followed the call from Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič for increased support to the EU's battery manufacturing industry.
As outlined in our options paper, the Innovation Fund can contribute to the development of this sector in several ways.

Description
The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration and commercialisation of innovative net-zero and low-carbon technologies. The Innovation Fund aims to bring industrial solutions to decarbonise Europe to the market and is funded with revenues from the auctioning of allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System.
The Innovation Fund has already held three large-scale calls, providing a total of €6.5 billion in grants to support 65 projects. The European Commission has also held three calls for small-scale projects with total capital costs below €7.5 million, selecting 66 projects requesting around €225 million in grants. A fourth call with a €4 billion budget wa launched at the end of 2023 covering large, medium, and small-scale projects, as well as dedicated topics for clean tech manufacturing and pilots.
