EU for Talanoa

The 'EU for Talanoa' conference is organised by the European Commission on 13 June 2018 as part of the EU's contribution to the Talanoa Dialogue, an international process to take stock of the collective and individual efforts towards the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The inter-institutional high-level event aims to

• stimulate discussions related to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the preparation of the next set of nationally determined contributions
• show how the EU is delivering on its climate goals and accelerating the low-emission transition, building on the EU's technical submission to the Talanoa Dialogue
• support the involvement of all public and private actors in the fight against climate change.

The event will bring together representatives from EU institutions, cities and regions, civil society, the private sector, trade unions and other relevant stakeholders from EU Member States and countries outside the EU.

The event will take place in at the European Commission's Charlemagne building in Brussels.

Call for expressions of interest in pitching “Innovative ideas for meeting Climate Action Goals"

The call for expressions of interest in pitching project ideas is now closed.

The pitches will concern the deployment of innovative ideas, services or solutions that have a clear ambition to demonstrate the potential of a new idea to meet the needs and priorities of stakeholders, including citizens, businesses and local and national governments, in meeting the long-term goals of Paris Agreement. The pitches will be presented at the conference purely for dissemination purposes, in line with the awareness-raising nature of this event.

Background

The Paris Agreement opened a new chapter in international climate policy. It set a framework for global action to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change in the coming decades, with the objective to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and aim to pursue efforts to limit this increase to 1.5°C.

To review the ambition and progress towards these goals, the Paris climate conference (COP21) in 2015 decided to convene a facilitative dialogue in 2018, the so-called Talanoa Dialogue. Aside from taking stock of the collective and individual efforts towards the above goals, the dialogue aims to inform the preparation of the next set of nationally determined contributions – countries' climate action plans under the Paris Agreement.
