This page highlights breakthrough climate initiatives funded through Horizon Europe, bringing research and innovation to life through engaging case studies. Each case study illustrates real-world example projects addressing critical climate challenges, including innovative climate mitigation and adaptation solutions. Our case studies aim to showcase how EU-funded research and innovation projects translate scientific advancements into practical solutions.
This case study features three Horizon Europe projects within its Cluster 6 "Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment" which are driving the adoption of climate-smart practices. Climate Farm Demo connects European farmers to implement sustainable practices enhancing productivity, DigitAF provides digital tools for agroforestry to meet climate goals, and Root2Res boosts crop resilience to climate change impacts through root phenotyping. These initiatives demonstrate Horizon Europe’s role in achieving climate goals through innovation in the agriculture sector.
Case study: Climate-Smart Agriculture & Forestry at Scale
This case study focuses on European R&I on batteries as a key enabler for the electrification of the energy and transport industrial sectors. The shift towards electrification provides an opportunity for the European Union to reduce its dependency on foreign fuels and be more strategically autonomous in the field of its energy needs. The case study focuses on projects delivering diverse battery technology solutions across the entire batteries R&I value chain (raw materials, advanced materials & manufacturing, battery end-use applications, recycling, etc.).
Case study: Battery Technologies: Advancing E-Mobility and Stationary Solutions
This case study features four Horizon Europe projects - Eastern Lights, AURORA, Carbon4Minerals, and CaLby2030 - that are advancing industrial carbon management to help the EU reach its climate targets. These initiatives drive innovation across the value chain by validating onshore storage, qualifying high-efficiency capture solvents, and converting CO2 into sustainable construction materials. Collectively, they demonstrate Horizon Europe’s role in competitively scaling technical carbon management solutions.
