The European Commission hereby announces the following information concerning the aggregate number of international credits that were exchanged for allowances by EU ETS operators by 31 October 2014:
The total number of international credits exchanged since the exchange function became operational amounts to 157.36 million, an increase of 24.54 million from the figures published in May 2014. Of these 79.83 million were Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and 77.53 million were Emission Reduction Units (ERUs). The CERs and ERUs exchanged were issued in respect of projects in a limited number of countries, with 80.08% of CERs originating from China and 5.30% from India. 73.76% of ERUs exchanged were issued in respect of projects in Ukraine and 22.48% Russia projects.
Credits issued in respect of emission reductions occurring in the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol can only be exchanged in the EU ETS until 31 March 2015. These credits cannot be exchanged after this date, even if they were to be banked into the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. Account holders in the EU ETS will be able to identify such credits based on information in the registry. More information is available in the FAQ.
