Global Covenant of Mayors recognised for its action for the climate

Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has today announced the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy as the winner of the 2nd Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity. The Covenant was selected from 113 candidates in 48 different countries for its ability to enhance and support climate leadership across 11,000 different cities and local governments worldwide to advance towards a low-carbon economy and society. The award ceremony for the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity will take place on 9th November at the COP26 in Glasgow, UK.

Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Co-Chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors said, “Cities are trailblazers in the race to net zero and this prize recognizes the urgency of tackling the climate crisis across the globe. We will carry forward the momentum given to us by the Gulbenkian Foundation to support mayors who are leading the way to ambitious climate action.”

The award of €1 million will be used to fund large-scale projects to advance critical infrastructure projects on climate mitigation and adaptation efforts in Senegal and Cameroon. In Senegal, five cities will be awarded funds to improve the supply of drinking water to help adapt to climate impacts such as droughts, and in Cameroon, one city will be awarded funds to support the development of energy efficiency solutions. The projects in both countries were selected for their high potential to drive the energy transition and increase climate resilience in Africa. They were all at an early planning stage, and dependent on funding to progress to implementation.
