Description
The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration and commercialisation of innovative net-zero and low-carbon technologies. The Innovation Fund aims to bring industrial solutions to decarbonise Europe to the market and is funded with revenues from the auctioning of allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System.
The Innovation Fund has already held three large-scale calls, providing a total of €6.5 billion in grants to support 65 projects. The European Commission has also held three calls for small-scale projects with total capital costs below €7.5 million, selecting 66 projects requesting around €225 million in grants. A fourth call with a €4 billion budget was launched at the end of 2023 covering large, medium, and small-scale projects, as well as dedicated topics for clean tech manufacturing and pilots.
Following the EU ETS revision in 2023, the Innovation Fund now:
- extends the scope of funding both in terms of sectors (maritime, buildings, road transport) and in terms of level of innovation, allowing support to upscale innovative technologies
- introduces new financing mechanisms whereby projects are selected on the basis of an auction (competitive bidding) and are supported through fixed premium contracts, contracts for difference, or carbon contracts for difference.
