The total number of international credits exchanged since the exchange function became operational in March 2014 amounts to 506.3 million. This is an increase of around 26.8 million credits compared to the number of international credits exchanged published in May 2020.

Since 31 March 2015, only credits issued in relation to emissions reductions during the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (so-called "CP2-credits") can be exchanged in the EU Emissions Trading System.

A total of 121 million CP2 credits (Certified Emission Reductions - CERs) were exchanged since March 2014.

More information on the number and type of credits exchanged by 30 April 2021, by country of origin, project and commitment period, is available in the annexed excel file.

Until 30 April 2021, it was possible to use the international credit entitlements available to the ETS installations and aircraft operators in Phase 2 and 3 of the EU ETS. In Phase 4, the Union has a domestic emissions reduction target and does not allow anymore the use of international credits for the EU ETS.
