Three hundred people, including more than 30 from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Climate Action, put their best foot forward today in support of an ambitious global climate deal in Paris this December.

The special 10K run was organised by the Minister of the Environment for the Brussels region Céline Fremault and a Brussels-based running magazine ahead of the Paris climate conference, where a new global climate deal is due to be concluded. The event was limited to 300 participants – a symbolic reference to the distance in kilometres between the two cities. The registration fee will be donated to a climate fund.

Runners were each given a piece of puzzle to help complete a giant picture of the world at the end of the run. The aim of the event was to show that climate change concerns everyone and that we can all make a difference through a concerted collective effort. Artur Runge-Metzger, Director of International and Climate Strategy at the European Commission said: "This is the spirit of collaboration and cooperation we need for a successful outcome in Paris. We have started the race but we still have a lot of work to do before we cross the finishing line in December."

The Paris conference will take place from 30 November to 11 December and is the 21th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
