The European Commission is hosting a high-level conference in Brussels (13 June) on the EU's contribution to the Talanoa Dialogue, a global process to take stock of the efforts towards the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The 'EU for Talanoa' conference (for full recording, see link below) aims to show how the EU is delivering on its climate goals, what progress has been made since Paris and what the EU is doing to accelerate the low-carbon transition and modernisation of the economy.
The event will also stimulate discussions on global implementation of the Paris Agreement ahead of the COP24 climate summit in December and how to involve all public and private actors in the fight against climate change.
The event will bring together representatives from EU institutions, cities and regions, civil society, the private sector, trade unions and other relevant stakeholders from within and outside the EU. Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete will deliver a keynote speech and take part in the opening discussions, while a range of high-level speakers will be taking part throughout the conference, including Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The 2015 Paris Agreement opened a new chapter in international climate policy. It set a framework for global action to reduce emissions and adapt to impacts of climate change in the coming decades, with the objective to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit this rise to 1.5°C. To review the ambition and progress towards these goals, a facilitative dialogue is taking place throughout this year – the so-called Talanoa Dialogue – to take stock of the collective and individual efforts towards the Paris goals and inform the preparation of the next nationally determined contributions, countries' climate action plans for helping to deliver on Paris.
