The EU is seeking swift preparation for the effective and comprehensive implementation of the Paris Agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference from 16 to 26 May 2016, in Bonn, Germany.

The first negotiating session since the adoption of the historic climate deal last December will start to develop the detail of how the agreement will be implemented. This includes issues such as an enhanced framework for transparency on countries’ actions, the registry for countries’ climate commitments and the structure of the future 5-yearly global stocktakes aimed at increasing ambition.

Among the EU’s objectives for the session will be maintaining the balance and spirit of the Paris Agreement.

A key challenge for all countries is to swiftly turn their national climate plans into concrete policies that will accelerate action to keep global warming well below 2°C and increase their resilience to climate impacts.

The climate conference will also continue work on efforts to step up international climate action before 2020 to narrow the emissions gap that exists between current pledges and the long-term temperature goal.

The Paris Agreement was signed by 175 Parties in New York on 22 April 2016, setting a new record for the most first-day signatures to an international agreement. It will come into effect once it has been ratified by at least 55 parties, representing at least 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
