Under the theme "Shaping our common future: working for prosperous, cohesive and sustainable societies for our citizens", the EU-CELAC Summit held in Brussels on 10-11 June 2015 brought together European, Latin American and Caribbean leaders to strengthen relations between these regions. This year’s discussions focused on important global challenges including climate change.

Miguel Arias Cañete, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, said: “The EU's partners in the Latin American and Caribbean countries share our concern about climate change. We are committed to deepening climate cooperation, focusing both on low-emission development and on adaptation to climate change. Paris is a unique opportunity for our regions to step up to the plate.”

At the Summit, leaders from 61 countries and the EU institutions adopted a joint declaration highlighting the progress made in cooperation in different areas and a reviewed and expanded action plan. The declaration gives special importance to climate change and the upcoming United Nations climate conference in Paris this December.

It highlights both regions' determination to work together ahead of and at the conference to bring about the ambitious and balanced agreement that is needed to address the challenges emanating from climate change. The partners express their will to adopt a global legally binding agreement by 2015 and for it to come into effect and be implemented from 2020, applicable to all parties.
