International aviation and maritime transport are a significant and growing source of global emissions. At the Paris climate conference, the EU makes the case for action to address these emissions and identify opportunities for international cooperation.

Carbon dioxide emissions from international aviation and maritime transport currently represent around 5% of global emissions. As international transport is expected to keep on growing, emissions are projected to significantly grow in the years and decades to come. Projections for 2050 indicate that, under a business-as-usual scenario, aviation and maritime transport will be responsible for 10% to 33%, respectively, of global carbon dioxide emissions.

If left unaddressed, these emissions will undermine other efforts made to limit the increase of average global temperature increase below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

On the thematic day dedicated to transport at the Paris climate conference, the European Commission hosts a side event to allow for exchanges on the case for action to address emission reductions from the aviation and maritime sectors and on opportunities for international cooperation to share experiences and spur action.

The event 'Aviation/maritime – the case for action' takes place in the EU Pavilion at COP21 on 3 December at 16:30–18:00. The high-level panel brings together speakers from the European Commission, Organisation for International Co-operation and Development (OECD), Marshall Islands, Dominican Republic and Kenya.
