The European Commission welcomes the political agreement on the monitoring, reporting and verification of maritime emissions reached by the Council following the positive vote in the European Parliament's Environment Committee.
International shipping is a growing source of greenhouse gas emissions globally. The proposed Regulation on the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport is a first step to reduce these emissions at the EU level.
The proposed EU-wide system is also designed to contribute to discussions at the global level. The Commission is committed to work with its partners to encourage these developments in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
