The European Commission's ozone layer protection team has received the 2012 Ozone Protection Award of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Regional Ozone Network for Europe and Central Asia (ECA Network) for their strong commitment to fighting illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances.

The team, which works in the Commission's Directorate-General for Climate Action, Unit C2, received the award at the ECA Network's 9-11 October meeting in Istanbul. The other winners were from China, Finland, Kyrgyzstan, FYR Macedonia, Russia, Serbia and Uzbekistan.

Established in 2010, the Ozone Protection Award aims to provide incentives and recognition to customs and enforcement officers who succeed in preventing illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances and related equipment.

It also contributes to raising awareness about the Montreal Protocol and promotes cooperation between customs services and national officials in charge of ozone layer protection. Most man-made ozone depleting substances are also very potent greenhouse gases.

The Commission team also won the award in 2010.
