Bonn climate conference: good progress to implement the Paris Agreement

The first formal negotiating session in Bonn since the adoption of the historic Paris Agreement last December made good progress in developing the rules and tools that will guide the implementation of the Paris Agreement. In particular, the Bonn talks showed progress on some of the EU's key priorities including rules to ramp up ambition over time, transparency provisions to track progress, and capacity building to help developing countries implement their national climate targets.

On the closing of the Bonn climate conference, the EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete said: "Bonn showed that we are moving from questions of principle to action: from the what to the how. The key to this is respecting the political balance of the Paris Agreement by moving forward together on all elements. At the same time, all countries must put in place policies and measures to deliver on their pledges. In the EU, we have a strong record on delivering on our climate targets. We have already started our homework of implementing the Paris Agreement by bringing forward legislation and putting in place the policies needed for the low-carbon transition."
