Today the national winners of the World You Like Challenge for Europe's best climate solutions were announced in Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal. The winning projects include a community composting initiative, two climate-friendly housing developments, an art studio which turns waste into new gadgets and an initiative that counters climate change through sowing new pastures.
European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard said: "These projects show that all Europeans can contribute to saving the climate by taking simple steps that also save us money and improve our quality of life. It has been truly encouraging to see so many innovative projects that were submitted in the World You Like Challenge from across the EU. These will help us build a world you like, with a climate you like – for current and future generations."
The European public voted for their favourites among 269 submissions. From the ten projects with most votes, a jury selected the project that was most practical, efficient and inspiring.
For Bulgaria, the jury selected Food for the Earth, a community composting initiative in Sofia which also increases citizens' environmental awareness.
Italy’s winner is EASYHOME 4EQ, a housing complex which uses only renewable energy sources in its buildings.
The Lithuanian winner is different design studio "Absurd Idea", which has an original approach in promoting recycling by creating new trends from old items.
Poland's Low energy houses for everyone won by combining low-cost techniques to reduce energy consumption with the traditional Polish building style.
Portugal's winner is Sown Biodiverse Pastures, an initiative that not only increases the pasture's productivity, but also helps to avoid CO2 emissions and reduce erosion.
The World You Like Challenge rewards one climate project in these five countries. The overall European winner of the Challenge will be announced at the Sustainia Award Ceremony on 7 November in Copenhagen.
The Challenge is part of the European Commission's communication campaign about climate change, A world you like, with a climate you like. Since its launch in October 2012, the campaign has reached millions of Europeans. It has attracted over 40,000 followers on social media, and received the support of nearly 200 partner organisations across the EU and several celebrities, including UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and award-winning actor Colin Firth.
