Four hundred runners, including almost 50 from the European Commission, today took part in an event to support two climate action landmarks: the Paris Agreement's entry into force last week and the Marrakech climate conference (COP22) currently underway.

The 10 km climate run aimed to encourage individual actions against climate change following the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, the global climate deal that commits all countries to limit warming to well below 2 degrees. It was organised by Céline Fremault, the Minister of the Environment for the Brussels region, and a local running magazine.

As part of the event, the four hundred runners had to pick up individual written climate pledges at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Climate Action. These pledges, ranging from switching to green energy provider to travelling less by car, were then assembled into a giant mural at the end of the run. Following the success of the first Brussels climate run last year, organisers hoped to inspire more people to take climate-friendly decisions in their own lives.

Artur Runge-Metzger, the Commission's Director of Climate Strategy, Governance and Emissions from Non-trading Sectors, said: "I am delighted about this second edition of the Brussels climate run. This is the local engagement we need to catalyse climate action and achieve a global shift to low-carbon economy."

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is taking place from 7 to 18 November 2016 in Marrakech.
